Relationship between Shyness and the Academic Achievement among Adolescents of Karachi

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to examine the relationship between shyness and academic achievement among adolescents. It was assumed that there would be a significant relationship between shyness and academic achievement in adolescents. In order to empirically test the variables, the 13-Item revised version of Cheek and Buss Shyness Scale (RCBS; Cheek & Melchior, 1990) was employed for measuring shyness and for academic achievement of students, their percentage from the previous year was used. The sample of N = 200 Male n = 100 & Femalen n = 100 ) was taken from Grade VI-X from private schools of KarachiPakistan. The participants belonged to 12 to 16 years old age group. The results indicated that there is a significant negative relationship between shyness and academic achievement (-0.38, p = 0.01 ). The implication of the current study highlights the needs for nurturing shy students to increase academic achievement.
